A Book Fair

Books communicate knowledge and ideas. They portray culture and its diversity.

A book has a lot of advantages over other forms of communications in media in terms of its physical attractiveness, relative cost of it, accessibility, and the overall general convenience.

In detail it can be carried around, read comfortably. It’s about putting it up to the public domain, which in return attracts a lot of writers who want to reach out and be recognized for their ideas. English language has an unparalleled number of books that are sold thereof.

Books And Me At The Anna Centenary Library, Adyar

Books And Me at the Anna Centenary Library
Title Of The Paper: Postmodern Survey

I made a visit to the Anna Centenary Library, [Kotturpuram, Adyar] on January 25th 2020 [Saturday].

My enthusiasm grew higher as I started from home [in Tambaram Sanatorium] at 8:40 am. I boarded the beach train from the Sanatorium railway station at 8:50 am and got down at the Guindy railway station.

My anxiety grew higher as I waited for an auto and finally I managed to get one. I found myself gifted as I reached the Anna Centenary Library [Adyar] without much difficulty. I went on to token my bag and entered the library with some water in my hand as I thought it would ease my eager heart. I proceeded further and entered the library at 9:27 am.

‘Every time you enter a library you might say to yourself, ‘The world is quiet here’, as a sort of pledge proclaiming reading to be the greater good’.
- from The slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket

It is known that a person who keeps himself/herself occupied with books will never lose their peace of mind. Remembering this very own statement a plan to visit the library was scheduled on 7th of February 2020.

On that pleasant day along with a few classmates of mine, I boarded a bus to the Anna centenary library around 10.00 am and decided to spend the whole day there by reading books and referring them to take notes for our internal assessment test.

Exploring the library is not only a pleasant experience but also a beautiful experience for us.

The Anna Centenary Library is quite famous for its vast collection of books and also for its infrastructure. Therefore I have written down my experiences and my views about this visit to the library in this assignment.

OPTIMISM – A WAY OF LIFE

As part of the human race, my life too followed the rules and regulations of mortal life filled with joy and grief. Moreover I am a ‘woman’ above all. Wherever I turn, I find rules, restrictions, services that prevents me from enjoying my life or the so called ‘my freedom’. In spite of all these restrictions, I learnt the art of enjoying my life with things that were bestowed upon me.

My parents started to over protect me at times that made my situations even worse, by not letting me to even go and meet my childhood friends. It always took me ample amount of time to convince my parents and make them accept my requests.

On Happiness

On Happiness

I was one of the best rats: Physically, Intellectually and of sound breeding too. What happened to me from whom much was expected of? The pit stop of the rat race changed me for good.

We, human beings as a species, are condemned to be in a state of perpetual pursuit of happiness. The pursuit is never ending and evolving to newer and higher summits upon having achieved the  objective. To be forever moving forward. Thus, the direction which we are headed towards ought to be considered a step in advancement, which therein begs the question, ‘What is success?’.

When we consider how we have evolved, I expect procreation and social standing ranked high among our pursuits. Hence, our view of what is important in life and ensuing pursuits follow a rather primitive existence.

My New Experience

20/1/2020 my journey at 2:30 pm reminds me of the day, which is exactly one year before where I had to travel all the way to YMCA ground on a sunny day fully exhausted by the tiring journey and bright sunrays just to see the shut doors, empty grounds and closed food stalls. I was completely shocked and came back home with a disappointed long face.

This was not the end because the joy of visiting a book fair was always blooming inside me.

This summer my 2nd Book Fair visit was completely a different experience to be cherished. This was totally a different experience because in a book fair we usually run behind bundles and bundles of books but this time it was necessary to have keen eye on the expressions and gestures of people of different age groups.

I was thrilled to see not only at the small children fighting with their mom and dad for comic books but also at the old grandpa’s and mom’s having deep analysis of the philosophical books.

Just Happy Little Accidents...

“We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents”1 said Bob Ross in one of his very famous art videos. It’s interesting to note that this philosophy holds true to the process of painting, much like how it holds true to the process of creation and sustenance of life itself. Perhaps there is method in every chaos of this world.

Have you ever come across something which is completely perfect? Something flawless, extraordinary, unbelievable. Might be your favourite movie star, or the fresh, hot biryani from your favourite restaurant in town, or maybe someone you love, whose warm smile transcends any beautiful thing you've ever seen.

VISIT TO A BOOK FAIR

Studying Arts was never my choice, and so I had to take to Arts as part of my career option only out of sheer compulsion, since the Sciences had always been my interest.

I love drawing. It took me a whole semester to figure out what was happening around me. I really hated when I heard names of different genres, history of English literature. I wanted to quit because I did not understand anything. I studied in an English Medium school but never spoke English.

I have never visited libraries in all my life, nor did I know that such a thing as a library ever existed at all. All these made me feel insecure and worthless. After my UG second semester, however, things began to change. I started developing a liking for Literature, which in turn made me to appreciate everything around me. I adored it more than science. My originality was appreciated which made me to feel confident about myself.

I was returning from my native place after the long weekend for the Pongal holidays. Already I was missing my home and all of a sudden my friend Sara messaged me that those who are assigned to Rufus sir for European Fiction have to visit the book fair held at Nandanam YMCA Ground and write an essay on that. Actually I was returning on January 20 and unfortunately the book fair was about to close on January 21. I was too tired because of 12 hours travel in train but I had decided to go to the book fair on January 20 itself.

Since I was quite new to Chennai, I didn’t even know how to go to Nandanam. So I asked my friends for the bus route, but my sweet friends were ready to accompany me to the book fair. But I should also confess that, I was not in the mood to visit the book fair on that day. But I had no other options left.

My Visit to the Library

My Visit to the Library

It was a freak incident as I look back. I wanted to visit a friend of mine. While I was walking towards his house in that village near my hometown, I came across a building which was small outside. I just wanted to see what was inside the building. When I went inside I was shocked to see that it was a library. So, I went on looking at each and every book over there. I found so many novels, poetry books and kids’ books. I forgot that I was going to my friend’s house and I spent so much of time by seeing each and every book. Somehow, I lost track of time in that place.

When I came back for my Christmas holidays, I had time in my hand. So, I remembered about that library. I just felt like visiting the place again. When I went there, I was surprised to see that the library was renovated and the book shelves and their order were changed. So I decided to spend some time there, exploring the library and enjoying all its facilities and also reading some books.

I was just a mere three years old, when I had the fascination to go towards the grand old man of our village to get the mark of valour. Regretting for the pain that I by myself incurred it on me, and to my beautiful hand for a while, I had never felt insane for the act then.

But now it’s really shocking to know how seriously a village and its people irrespective of the age, can be driven by superstitious beliefs.

Thinking that I had all the symptoms of Jaundice in me, my family took me to the elderly man who is known for his methods to cure any sort of illness and diseases. Without any knowledge I acknowledged to open up my fingers where the Hot rod was placed and was pulled with a rapid speed. The rod made a deep mark in my hand which made one of my fingers almost to cut off from my hand leaving all other its companion fingers.

MY QUEST

“Everyone has a story to tell. Everyone is a writer, some are written in the books and some are confined in our hearts” - Savi Sharma

Penning down our memories recreate the happy moments that we experienced. I decided to write my story because someone out there might be strengthened through my testimonies.

When it comes to a family, parents will show their unconditional love towards their tiny-tots. Especially for little girls, their ‘Father’ become their ultimate Hero. My father, is a PG assistant, every day he has to manage two groups of commerce students. He earns a lot, he provides me and my sister with what we want. He makes sure that we had everything that we needed, but he is 124 km away from us. His absence made me feel down.

I took the bus route no. 21G from West Tambaram and had to walk for a short distance to reach the Anna Centenary library.

The library from outside looks like a very vast building with beautiful architecture that is situated in a large area. As I stepped inside, the library looked very organized and clean. It had many floors and there were a lot of people who had come to visit the library and spend time with books, even during the weekend.
